Relationships & Sexual Education (RSE) at Greenlands Primary

At Greenlands we use the Jigsaw PSHE and RSE scheme

What is Jigsaw?

The Jigsaw PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, Ecconomic) and RSE  (Relationships Education, Sex Education and Health Education) scheme, is a mindful approach to the teaching of PSHE  and RSE and has a strong focus on emotional and mental health and wellbeing.

All the year groups will be working on the same theme at the same time. However, lessons and learning will be differentiated across the school and topics taught will be relevant to the age groups.

Each topic (puzzle) is launched with an assembly which generates a whole school learning focus.

Overview

In Term 5, the Relationships theme focuses on a range of topics such as families, friendships, pets and animals, love and loss. An essential part of this topic focuses on safeguarding and keeping children safe. This topic also includes work on cyber safety, social networking with an emphasis on keeping safe on the internet.

Throughout the term children will learn strategies to deal with conflict, their own strengths and selfesteem. Children will have the opportunity to identify different roles and responsibilities in different families, looking at a variety of stereotypes. All of the lessons will be delivered in an age-appropriate way, including through books and stories, to meet the children's needs.

In Term 6, the Changing Me theme focuses on how the children change as they grow older, from young to old, throughout their teenage years, assertiveness, self-respect and safeguarding. Many diverse themes will be discussed and explored such as self and body image, puberty, attracting and accepting changes.

Throughout term 6, each class will look at moving ahead, to a new year group, new teachers and the transition to secondary school. Life cycles and how babies are made and grow are treated sensitively and are taught to meet the children's need at an age appropriate level. All of the year groups learn about how people and bodies change. This topic links with the Science curriculum when teaching children about life cycles, babies and puberty.

In Year 6 we teach a separate sex education unit of work. The content of this will be shared with parents at the beginning of term 6 and you will have the option to withdraw your child from this aspect of RSE.
