Relationships & Sexual Education (RSE) at Greenlands Primary

At Greenlands, we use the Jigsaw PSHE and RSE scheme as a base for our RSE curriculum

 RSE Curriculum

The teaching of PSHE at Greenlands Primary School is underpinned by the the Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), and Health Education guidance 2019 and we include statutory Relationships and Health Education within our whole-school PSHE Programme.

Direct teaching of Relationships Education and Sex Education is within Terms 5 and 6, through the topics of Relationships and Changing Me respectively.

Relationships

In Term 5, the Relationships topic focuses on a range of topics such as families, friendships, pets and animals, love and loss. An essential part of this topic focuses on safeguarding and keeping children safe. This topic also includes work on cyber safety, social networking with an emphasis on keeping safe on the internet.

Throughout the term children will learn strategies to deal with conflict, their own strengths and self-esteem. Children will have the opportunity to identify different roles and responsibilities in different families, looking at a variety of stereotypes. All of the lessons will be delivered in an age-appropriate way, including through books and stories, to meet the children's needs.

Changing Me

In Term 6, the Changing Me topic focuses on how the children change as they grow older, from young to old, throughout their teenage years, assertiveness, self-respect and safeguarding. Many diverse themes will be discussed and explored such as self and body image, puberty, attracting and accepting changes.

Throughout Term 6, each class will look at moving ahead, to a new year group, new teachers and, for Year 6, the transition to secondary school. Life cycles and how babies grow and change into adults are treated sensitively and are taught to meet the children's needs at an age appropriate level. All of the year groups learn about how bodies change and grow. In Year 5 and 6 this includes puberty. This topic links with the Year 5 Science curriculum when teaching children about life cycles, babies and puberty.

In Year 6, we teach a separate sex education unit of work. The content of this will be shared with parents at the beginning of term 6 and you will have the option to withdraw your child from this aspect of RSE.
