Our Year 1 Approach

“I believe that education is all about being excited about something” – Steve Irwin

Learning in Year 1 at Greenlands Primary School

At Greenlands Primary School, learning in Year 1 builds carefully on the strong foundations children develop in Reception. We understand that children thrive best when learning feels familiar, purposeful and enjoyable, which is why we continue to include opportunities for learning through play alongside more formal teaching.

A Smooth Transition from Reception into Year 1

Moving from Reception into Year 1 is an important milestone. To make this transition smooth and positive, we continue to use Continuous Provision in Year 1. This means that children still have access to practical, hands‑on learning opportunities alongside focused teaching sessions.

Research shows that play remains a powerful way for young children to learn well beyond the Early Years. In Year 1, play helps children practise, apply and deepen the skills they have already learned, while also getting ready for more formal learning in the future.

As one early years expert explains:

“Play helps children make sense of what they learn. It brings together their thoughts, feelings and understanding of the world.”

Why Learning Through Play Matters

The early years of a child’s life are crucial for brain development. Young children learn best through first‑hand experiences and repetition. By exploring, building, talking and experimenting, children create strong foundations for more complex learning later on.

That is why our Year 1 classroom is carefully designed to include meaningful play opportunities. These experiences allow children to rehearse skills, explore ideas and make connections in a way that feels natural and engaging.

What Does Continuous Provision Look Like in Year 1?

Our Year 1 learning environments (both inside and outside) are familiar and inviting, helping children feel confident and secure. Areas include:

  • Role Play – encouraging imagination, communication and social skills
  • Construction – developing problem‑solving, teamwork and spatial awareness
  • Creative Areas – supporting fine motor skills and self‑expression
  • Investigation Areas – linking to subjects such as history, geography and science
  • Reading Areas – nurturing a love of books and storytelling
  • Maths Areas – embedding number and problem‑solving into everyday play
  • Writing Opportunities Everywhere – giving children real reasons to write across the classroom

Reading, writing and maths are woven naturally into all areas so children see these skills as meaningful tools for real life.

The Role of Adults

Adults play a vital role in supporting children’s learning. In Year 1, staff:

  • Talk with children during play, asking thoughtful questions
  • Introduce new vocabulary naturally through conversation
  • Guide and support learning at the right moment
  • Observe children carefully to plan next steps

This ensures that play is purposeful and linked to curriculum expectations, while still being enjoyable and child‑led.

A Balanced Year 1 Curriculum

Each day in Year 1 includes:

  • Focused teaching sessions for phonics, writing, maths and other subjects
  • Time for children to independently apply their learning through Continuous Provision
  • Opportunities to revisit and strengthen skills in a hands‑on way

This balance helps children develop independence, confidence and resilience while ensuring all areas of the Year 1 curriculum are taught and assessed.

Supporting the Whole Child

Our approach supports children’s development in many ways, including:

  • Confidence and independence
  • Strong language and communication skills
  • Creativity and imagination
  • Problem‑solving and critical thinking
  • Social skills and emotional wellbeing
  • Physical development and coordination

Children are encouraged to explore, take risks, ask questions and learn from their experiences.

Preparing Children for the Future

Continuous Provision in Year 1 is not a step backwards. Instead, it is a carefully planned, research‑informed approach that helps children move confidently from the Early Years into Key Stage 1.

By building on what children already know and how they learn best, we ensure that every child remains curious, motivated and ready to succeed – not only in Year 1, but throughout their time at Greenlands Primary School and beyond.
